As a patient with a complicated dental history and several negative experiences in the past, I was extremely fearful of approaching a new dentist and consequently I delayed essential treatment for a number of years.

My declining oral health prompted me to act however, and in my search for a new practice I came across the website for Town Hall Dental, which mentioned specialisms in nervous patients. Although hesitant I booked a consultation and within a few visits the treatment I had been delaying and dreading for so long was completed and I couldn’t be more thrilled with the results.

From the first phone call to the final check up, each member of the Town Hall team was friendly, attentive, approachable and really made me feel looked after, while maintaining the hygienist level of professionalism. Nothing was too much trouble, and at each stage of my treatment I was kept well informed of what was happening and given the opportunity to ask as many tedious questions as I could think of! As for my phobia, everyone did their utmost to put me at ease, reassure me and alleviate my anxiety, which has been a tremendous help in restoring my confidence in dentistry.

Even though I live an hour away from the surgery, it was worth every trip and every penny of the (very reasonable) treatment cost. “Like many people of my age terrible experiences with the school dentist left me with a profound fear of the dental profession. Apart from a trip to the emergency dentist four years ago I had not been to a surgery for over twenty years. So, when I decided in March to finally sort my mouth out (rotting teeth and gum disease) I took to the internet to find a practice that accepted nervous patients. “Prior to visiting the Town Hall practice my only experiences had been with the school dentist many years previously and these had left me with some very difficult memories which prevented me from seeking any treatment whatsoever. Unfortunately, this left me with teeth that I knew needed some work but over the years I grew to accept the gradual degradation and periodic toothache. However, when I developed an abscess and felt the unbelievable pain that goes with it I knew that something had to be done.

I trawled the internet looking for recommendations and advice which led me to a local dentist who seemed to be the right one for me. Sadly, I didn’t get the attention and support that I wanted so couldn’t take it to the next stage of getting some work done. Nevertheless, the abscess was still with me and the pain hadn’t gone away, so back on the search for the right dentist I became aware of Town Hall.

It was with some trepidation that I walked through the practice doors but I soon began to get reassurance from the reception staff who were very friendly and helpful. I was then seen by the practice manager Rachel, we sat down and talked about my past experiences and it was clear she wanted to know more about me as an individual. She then went on to give me a guided tour of the practice and introduce me to various staff members including the hygiene therapist and one of the dentists themselves. I felt a strong ‘family atmosphere’ which further reassured me this was the right place for me ! Incidentally, the refurbishment of the Town Hall has been carried out tastefully and within the character of the building which to me, as a born and bred local, is very important and pleasing to see.

Interestingly, even after I had left and after the pain of the abscess had subsided I was still confident enough to make an appointment to go back and see the dentist. Previously, I’m sure I would have given a sigh of relief that the pain had gone away and carried on ignoring the condition of my teeth.

So, I was happy to be meeting the dentist that I had had a chat with on my tour (Syed) as I already felt that I knew him, however, it was Imran that my appointment had been made with. Even this slight change in proceedings wasn’t enough to deter me as straight away he too made me feel very comfortable and at ease. I found it easy to talk to him about how I felt and we had a two way conversation about how to move things forward. From here he had a look at the condition of my teeth and we discussed the right course of action.

I’m now in a position where I have visited the practice 3 times, once with the hygiene therapist and twice with Imran. My confidence has grown with each appointment and I now feel comfortable about walking through the door. I did meet Rachel again when we had a chat about my bill, even this was favourable as she pointed out to me that the way they calculated it would result in it being less than I thought and also Imran wouldn’t be charging for a little bit of extra work outside my agreed treatment plan. Now that is a bonus !

My view of dentistry has changed significantly from where I was less than a few months ago and I’m very pleased with my ‘new’ teeth …….. and I’m sure I smile a little bit more now !
